You Don't Have to Be So Hard on Yourself
How do you talk to yourself when something goes wrong? Maybe you immediately think:
“I'm so stupid.”
“I should have known better.”
“I always do this.”
“Why can't I just get it together?”
Most of us would never speak to someone we love that way. Yet sometimes, we become incredibly harsh with ourselves.
Hey! You're Human. You're Going to Make Mistakes.
Making a mistake doesn't mean you're a failure. Having a difficult day doesn't mean you're failing at life. Needing help doesn't mean you're incapable. And not knowing what to do next doesn't mean you're behind everyone else. You're allowed to be a work in progress.
You might believe that criticizing yourself will motivate you to do better. But constantly telling yourself that you're not good enough can leave you feeling ashamed, anxious, or afraid to try again. Growth doesn't require you to hate the version of yourself you're trying to change. You can want to do better while still treating yourself with kindness.
The next time you make a mistake, pause before criticizing yourself.
Ask:
“What would I say to someone I love if they were going through this?”
Maybe you'd tell them that everyone makes mistakes.
Maybe you'd remind them that one bad decision doesn't define them.
Maybe you'd simply sit with them and say, “It's going to be okay.”
You deserve to hear those words, too.
Self-compassion doesn't mean ignoring mistakes. It means learning from them without turning them into a reason to dislike yourself.
You can say:
“I didn't handle that the way I wanted to, but I can learn from it.”
“This is difficult, but I don't have to figure it out all at once.”
“I made a mistake, and I'm still worthy of compassion.”
That is accountability without cruelty.
If you've been hard on yourself for a long time, changing that voice may take practice.
Start small. Notice the way you speak to yourself. Pause when you hear that familiar criticism.
Then ask:
“Can I respond to myself with a little more kindness today?”
You don't have to earn compassion by being perfect.
You deserve it right now.
